Science.
A little science mixed with a little homelessness.
Here's a little science mixed with some of my outside of the box thinking. When a human body becomes cold your brain instantly goes to work. Our brains release neurochemicals, neurotransmitters and hormones. The reason our brains do this is to help the body regulate the cold. Norepinephrine is a neurotransmitter acting as a hormone causing your body's flight or fight response to cold. Epinephrine is released as a stress reducer. A significant release of dopamine which is a pleasure chemical occurs. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that regulates mood and is also released. Endorphins that are meant to reduce pain produced when you are cold. Your brain releases these chemicals to help relieve the body from the ankle symptoms of cold stress.
The same chemicals that are released are very similar to the chemicals that cause you to feel happy, reduce stress and feel an overall sense of comfort.
An individual experiencing homelessness is no exception to these chemicals being released.
Experiencing homelessness is a very difficult and harsh situation. The complexity of homelessness makes homelessness difficult to understand for many. It is a constant nightmare to make it through each day. Especially on the frigid cold days and nights. The brain of someone experiencing homelessness and living under constant stress, can deplete neurochemicals, neurotransmitters and hormones needed to survive. I feel that if they are depleted of these chemicals, how can they ever experience happiness? Or could it be that this is the only way someone experiencing homelessness know how to feel the effects of these chemicals?
Because of trauma impacted brains which make you think differently. Substance use disorders that can disassociate you from reality. And other mental illnesses that have native effects. Maybe these untreated diagnosis that people experiencing homelessness most likely live with, make them actually feel happy when they are cold? My hypothesis is one reason individuals remain homeless is because they deplete their chemicals needed to survive. I believe it is possible for individuals experiencing homelessness to enjoy being cold. There are many other proven harsh factors that contribute to an individual remaining homeless.
